original and clever email addresses such as fafaw, sleeper, govols and others (I’m really not picking on you – these are some of my favorites). However these email addresses

don’t identify our members, so please include your name when you are responding so that others can see who is attending our events. Thank you!

Luxor Wins at Phoenix’s Karaoke

Wow is the best word to describe the evening. The venue was perfect because it had a real stage which promoted a great view of all of the Krewe performances (of which there were many). Luxor had a total of 4 entries and won two trophies.

For Best Group, our rendition of KISS performing “I Want to Rock and Roll All Night” won 1st place!!!! Our KISS rock stars were Russ Mire, Kevin Bentley, McClain Gordon, Bob LaBonia and Bill Brewer. The response to their performance was so overwhelming that the Karaoke manager asked them to come back on stage for an encore (which they did). The crowd went wild!! Congratulations to our KISS rock band. The shock value alone was worth the price of admission.

For Best Duet, Cathy Welsh and Cindy Mire performed “In the End” by Lincoln Park and landed 2nd place.   For those not familiar with Lincoln Park, it’s a rap group. Cathy was the brains behind this one.

The other two performances were: Pat Hoffman singing a solo “Fire and Rain” by James Taylor and Russ Mire singing a solo “Unchain My Heart” by Joe Cocker.

One of our newest members, Charles Boone also performed a song although he represented Ennead. Charles has dual membership (Luxor and Ennead).

A very huge cheer for Luxor!!!      We truly rock!!!

2011 Carnival Charities
After reviewing local children’s charities including a week of on-site meetings with each one the Carnival Memphis Charities for 2011 are:

  1. Hope House
  2. Memphis Athletic Ministries (MAM)
  3. SRVS - Shelby County Residential & Vocational Services

Luxor is fortunate to have our Krewe's 501(c)(3) status and to support this we all help support charitable events during the year.

Charitable/Volunteer Committee

We now have an official “Charitable Committee”. This name best describes the goal of this group which is offering charity work in and around our community for children’s’ organizations and other needy groups. Fundraising may be a part of this committee’s agenda but it primarily will enlist our members as volunteers for worthy events. Susan Orabone is the Chairperson, with Donna DiVietro and Kathy Breckenridge completing the committee. Keep in mind that volunteer opportunities will be varied and most often require just your time. Often it’s our time that is the most precious resource we can offer, so let’s give it when we can. Look for details in upcoming editions of the Luxor Ledger on more volunteer opportunities throughout the year. Here are just two events which our new Charitable group has targeted:

  •   Boo Bowling planned for October (previously called Bowling for Kids)

  •   Filling book bags for Corner Stone and Pearly Gates, both local schools that need help providing educational material for their young students.

Volunteer Charitable Opportunity Results

Saturday, March 26th, was the 5K run hosted by Christ United Methodist Church to benefit two not-for-profits: 1) the Cornerstone Prep and 2) The Pearly Gates Youth Community Coalition. Christ United Methodist Church is located at Grove Park and Poplar. The race began at 8am with runners lining up at 7:50 am.

Our volunteers for this event were:

  •   Fontaine Moore

  •   Kathy Breckenridge

  •   Mace Gearhardt

  •   Betty Reschenberg

  •   Cindy Mire

  •   Russ Mire

  •   Donna Hoffman

We manned the water table at the 2 miles marker. However, since it was raining (sometimes hard) and somewhat chilly, very few runners wanted a cup of water. All they needed to do if they were thirsty was tilt their head upward and open their mouths . Regardless of the weather, we had a blast and were thrilled to be able to help such a wonderful cause and, of course, praised the runners who participated.   A Hip Hip Hooray for our Luxor volunteers!!

Recipient for our Canned Food Items…

Luxor has always asked our members to offer non-perishable food items for our charities.  Beginning in 2011, we are going to direct our collected non-perishable food items to SRVS. To make this collection convenient for our members we ask that each of you bring something from the list below to each of our happy hours.  The items listed are specific to SRVS needs.  Keep in mind that SRVS feeds a total of 525 individuals (children and adults) each and every day of the week operating 120 group homes.  The following is a list of suggested items.
